How Yogurt Can Contribute To Colon Health
The best yogurt for you is plain yogurt, which has only two ingredients: live cultures and milk (whole milk, low-fat, or skim). Just remember that the longer the ingredients list, the more calories you get and the less yogurt nutrition. The highly sweetened yogurt gives you more calories in the sweetener they use than you get in the yogurt itself. If you're like me, I love the fruit flavored yogurts in the store but I also found out that it is simple to make my own fruit yogurts and at least I know what is in it, not to mention my toddler loves it. She is always asking for fruit smoothies, which of course I make with a yogurt base before I add all the wonderful fresh or frozen fruits.
I have found the best yogurt is Stonyfields Organic Yogurt as it has the highest level of the live and active cultures that are so important for our colon besides containing inulin.
It's been said that you are only as healthy as your colon. Eating yogurt helps you care for your colon. Yogurt contains lactobacteria, intestines-friendly bacterial cultures that promotes a healthy colon, and even lowers your risk of colon cancer. Acidophilus, encourages the growth of healthy bacteria in the colon. You can lower your chance of colon diseases when you have more of these friendly bacteria in your colon. Somehow the good bacteria in yogurt seem to change the harmful substances we take in like nitrates and nitrites.
An important mineral that contributes to colon health and decreases the risk of colon cancer is calcium which yogurt is a rich source of. Calcium discourages excess growth of the cells lining the colon, which can place a person at high risk for colon cancer. People that have diets high in calcium have lower rates of colorectal cancer. One study showed that an average intake of 1,200 milligrams of calcium a day is associated with a 75 percent reduction of colorectal cancer.
Research done on a group of people who ate two cups of live-culture yogurt daily for three months found that they produced higher levels of immunity boosting interferon. The bacterial cultures in yogurt have also been shown to stimulate infection-fighting white cells in the bloodstream. Some studies have shown yogurt cultures to contain a factor that has anti-tumor effects in experimental animals.
