Breast Cancer Symptoms For Early Detection

by Stephan Grindley

Women of every age can fall victim to breast cancer. For this reason it is important to be informed about breast cancer symptoms and what you should do in the event that you experience one of them. While certain symptoms can be indicative of breast cancer only your doctor can tell you for sure. If you think you might have any of the following breast cancer symptoms it is wise to make an appointment with your doctor as soon as you can.

A lump is typically the first sign of breast cancer. The lump will feel different to the touch than the surrounding tissue. Developing the habit of performing a regular breast self exam is very important in order to catch such signs early, when a cancer, if present, is more treatable. Regular mammograms are another important screening tool for early detection of breast cancer.

There are a few more breast cancer symptoms to notice, after a lump. Let your doctor know immediately if the size or shape of your breast looks different. You may also notice dimples on the skin of your breast. If you have inverted nipples or see a discharge from one nipple, you should let your doctor know about this.

If you believe yourself to be suffering from Paget's disease, it is imperative that you contact your doctor, as with all cases where you believe your health to be affected. Paget's disease may be an indication of breast cancer, and symptoms include aggravated and itchy skin on the breast, pain, a higher level of sensitivity and a burning feeling - all of which indicate a development of the disease. It may cause redness and flakes around the areola and nipple due to skin changes in the breast area.

Occasionally other symptoms can be a sign of breast cancer. Unexplained and rapid weight loss is sometimes caused by breast cancer. Unexplained fever and chills that do not go away within a few days can also be a symptom. Bone or joint pains, jaundice and different neurological symptoms can occasionally be signs as well so keep an eye on those things.

One thing to remember is most of the time symptoms of breast cancer do not actually turn out to be cancer. However, this doesn't mean that you should not be serious with any symptoms that do occur. What it does mean is that you need to be certain to tell your doctor about them so he can look at them and tell you what is happening, there is no need to be overly alarmed. Just make sure to make an appointment with your doctor to get any symptoms checked.

It is imperative that women of all ages stay up to date with breast cancer symptoms because women both young and old are susceptible. However, since there are many symptoms which may point to breast cancer, you should check with your doctor for confirmation. If you believe yourself to have any breast cancer signs or symptoms, you would be well advised to visit your doctor as soon as possible. It's also important to get in the habit of doing a regular self exam, as well as having periodic mammograms on the schedule your doctor advises.
