Getting your Dry Skin Facts Straight

by Cyntia Alleyne

If you have dry skin then you should consider the fact that it may be a sign of a more serious condition. Since it is such a common ailment, most people don't concern themselves much when they notice they have dry skin. There are several factors that contribute to this ailment; weather, diet, or disease. It is easily spotted on the lower legs, arms, or flanks and is characterized by dryness, cracking, or scaly skin. Dry skin is produced when the skin quickly loses an excessive amount of moisture. In short, dry skin is caused by rapid transepidermal water loss, a condition that worsens with age.

Why do I have Dry Skin?

Dry skin is caused by many factors. Below we mention a few:

Pregnancy - some level of dry (or itchy) skin can occur in pregnancy.

Eczema - A form of dermatitis or inflammation of the upper layers of the skin that result in dry, red, and itchy skin.

Vitamin A deficiency - This vitamin deficiency can lead not only to dry skin but also to dry hair, broken fingernails, and dry eyes.

Dermatitis - Dry skin and dermatitis are prevalent during the winter months.

How to Treat Dry Skin Conditions

Most people use an inexpensive dry skin moisturizer as an emollient, however, this may cause pores to clog and create new skin problems. However, a much more effective and gentler solution are products created with natural ingredients that maintain the skin's moisture.

Using an air humidifier is also very useful if you suffer from dry skin, especially during winter. A small humidifier on the side of your bed will help your skin to retain moisture, but make sure your bedroom door is closed to keep moisture in.

BIOBALM is a natural balm and adaptogen for the skin. It offers natural eczema relief and dermatitis treatment. This product is also recommended for psoriasis, skin rashes and rosacea.
