Nail Care Tips for Everyone

by Jen Hopkins

People may seem to think that nail care is not that important when it comes to personal hygiene. On the contrary, it is very important as badly maintained nails do not only look bad, they can also interfere with our everyday tasks. Weak and cracked nails are very painful and it can be a distraction when you are important things to do.

One common problem that people have when it comes to their nails is the habit of nail biting. This habit is usually developed while they were still young and it got stuck until they grew older. Nail biting children may be acceptable but adults biting on their nails are another thing. So if you are one of those people who are still biting their nails even though they are already old, you should start thinking about stopping this ugly habit.

Nail biting, like any other bad habit is very hard to stop. There is really no easy way on how to stop nail biting. You just have to set a date on when you are going to stop and do it. One way that you can do to help remind yourself of this is by wearing gloves or putting on very good looking nail polish on your nails. This way, whenever you have the urge to nail bite, you will think twice before you actually do it.

Aside from this bad habit, there are also other nail problems that people encounter. One is having weak nails. These are often a result of poor nail care habits and a poor diet. Weak nails are hard to take care of as they can crack very easily. Eating healthy foods will help in making these nails stronger and less prone to breaking. One way to further improve the strength of your nails is by dipping them in warm olive oil a few times each week.

Nail polish is also a good way to protect your nails. These do not only serve to beautify your nails, but it adds a protective barrier to your nails and prevents them from getting scratched or cracking too easily. Even guys may opt to use clear nail polish to help make their nails more presentable, especially if their work involves meeting and dealing with a lot of people.

But applying nail polish should not be done continuously as it also has some negative effects on your nails. Nail polish is made up of chemicals that may potentially weaken your nails if used without resting your nails. Nails may even change color if you do not stop using nails polish from time to time. This is why it is recommended to leave your nails without any polish at least once a week to let them breathe.

Nail polish remover is also another chemical that you should be wary of. Using nail polish remover too often will leave your nails dry. Dry nails will of course be a lot easier to break than hydrated nails. Be sure to use hand lotion after applying nail polish remover, or even after washing your hands with soap to ensure that nails stay hydrated and protected.

Remember these nails care tips and use them together with basic nail care habits and you will surely have nice and healthy nails. Cracked and weak nails will be a thing of the past and you will be proud to show your nails to everyone that you meet.
